Anita Saarkessian
Anita Sarkeesian (Canadian-American) is a feminist media critic as well as a public speaker, and Canadian. Feminist Frequency was established by Sarkeesian. It hosts video clips featuring commentary and analysis of the depictions of women in the media and popular culture of today. Anita Sarkeesian, a Canadian-American media critic and blog writer that has received awards for her work, is an activist blogger. Feminist Frequency is a site for education that examines women's positions in the pop culture narratives, is her brainchild. The site also has the executive director. As well as working to highlight the problems surrounding the harassment and targeted attacks on women, other minorities in online spaces she is committed to breaking down the stigmas and stereotypes prevalent in pop culture. Holding a master's degree in political and social thought from York University Sarkeesian is also an extremely sought-after public speaker and she has delivered speech at the TEDxWomen Festival as well as The United Nations' Broadband Working Group on Gender. Passionate about issues of gender identities and feminisms from an early age she launched her own website Feminist Frequency in 2009 while studying at the university. It was a girl determined to make the series of videos on the internet to examine the gender roles in games. But, she was victimized by online harassment. The attack did not stop her, rather it strengthened her resolve as an activist for women in media. She has won many awards for her contributions to the cause of feminism. Anita Sarkeesian won awards for her work as a critic of media and founded Feminist Frequency. The nonprofit examines how women are depicted in pop culture today.
